Description
Product Overview
6-MP (Mercaptopurine) is an immunosuppressive and chemotherapeutic medicine that is primarily used to treat cancer, especially acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), as well as autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
As an antimetabolite, 6-MP inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis in cells, slowing or stopping the growth of rapidly dividing cells, including Colon cancer cells.
How Does 6-MP Work?
Mercaptopurine works by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which are necessary for cell division. By disrupting the ability of cells to multiply, it effectively targets and reduces the growth of abnormal, fast-growing cells, such as cancer cells in leukemia.
In autoimmune diseases, Mercaptopurine helps to control the immunity system, preventing it from attacking healthy tissues, thus reducing inflammation and symptoms associated with conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Uses Of 6-MP
-
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL):
Mercaptopurine is a key component in ALL treatment, particularly in maintenance therapy following remission. It helps to prevent the recurrence of leukemia by destroying any leftover cancer cells.
-
Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis:
Mercaptopurine suppresses the immune system and reduces inflammation, which helps control flare-ups and sustain remission in autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
